People seem to think that its the poor and unemployed that remain in Detroit that were the problem.. In reality its the fault of every American who drives a foreign car!! At least 1/2 of all cars I see are foreign, don’t you think that if most if not all Americans drove a American car we would still have 5 or 6 thriving manufacturers and parts suppliers still here in America?? I have spent time in 10 foreign countries They ALL drive their OWN countries cars! or at least not American cars!! They have pride in their OWN country and want to help their OWN workers!~!

Well, the “big 3” American Auto manufacturers have some of the blame:
They ignored quality for a looong time, never expecting competition from foreign manufacturers that did. Remember the Chevy Vega?
They also gave in time after time to the big unions, and now find themselves making less profit than they could.
But the biggest problem is Detroit itself, which has been run for Democrats almost in perpetuity. You cannot raise taxes and give greater and greater benefits to public employees forever, and expect industry to absorb it.
Eventually, everything hits a breaking point.

Darius; Thanks for the reply My main thesis again The failure of Americans to purchase their Own products; was largely responsible for the decline: It wasn’t the Democrats who owned the Auto industry that put profits over quality, It wasn’t the Democrats who outsources there manufacturing for more profits, It wasn’t the City unions and public employees that caused the problem ,Their wages and benefits were are similar to other large cities. Union wage levels are similar to wages paid in Japan Germany and other places at the time.Foreign companies had failures also Remember the Honda Civic[ trash], Opel Cadet [junk] Yugo extra junky, etc etc. Try importing your car or Harley motorcycle to India … 50% tariff, Germany, 30% traiff, Korea can’t be done, Japan closed to all auto imports until 1983 now 33% tax. The big business tycoons left and so did the TAX BASE because they could make more money Importing and selling cars, and Americans FLOCKED to buy them.

Well, let’s look at what competition did to the cars you mention:
      Opal: No longer in business
      Yugo: No longer in business
Honda: Improved their quality and now the Honda Civic is considered one of the most reliable cars on the market.
The US Worker remains at the top of the most productive in the world, but when they aren’t, it’s unions that protect them. Remember when a News crew caught Chrysler workers swilling beer and smoking Marijuana during their lunch break while sitting next to their expensive autos? Chrysler tried to fire them, but the union wouldn’t let them.
Do you think this would happen at Honda, Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari, etc? Not a chance.
So when there are quality problems, they may surely come from this minority of auto workers, and asking US consumers to simply disregard them is saying they shouldn’t have a choice.
I own American autos, but I do my research before buying them. I don’t simply say “American made first”. Why? Because in America we choose what is best for us, for our families, ect. I want those companies to succeed, but not because they have a birthright, but because they are the best. Unions have not helped that, they have hurt that cause.
And it is this big union mentality which has harmed both the American Auto industry AND Detroit.
Paying someone $30/hour to sweep metal shavings off the floor is a bit ridiculous, you must agree.

    Put down the Kool-Aid Bob.

Fact is Detroit is dead from drowning is the cesspool of liberalism. Both the city and auto industry died from shitty overpaid CEO’s and management, greed and unsustainable legacy cost, such as retirement benefits and health care, and outrageous government worker salaries for producing nothing.

Fact is Detroit is a DEMOCRAT city and has been for over 50 years.

Bob have you ever bought a new ‘American made’ auto in the last 30 years? Obviously not as many if not most parts have been made out of the USA for decades. ‘American made’ big auto failed to compete on the global stage when it came to quality and price. You would know this if you have bought a new ‘American made’ auto.

How’s NAFTA signed by DEMOCRAT Bill Clinton working out for the US worker?

One more thing Bob. Big business owns both the DEMOCRATS and REPUBLICANS.

Bob from Piedmont do you have any actual fact based data supporting your “big business tycoons left and so did the TAX BASE” comment regarding Detroit other than this article?

Does anyone else the have any accounting data in an article or Detroit records PDF. I tend to think even a health domestic auto industry would be too little too late to help debt ridded Detroit’s pension tsunami.

Here’s an interesting read too Bankrupt Cities, Municipalities List and Map:

Bob from Piedmont get it. The decline of unions because of Republicans is behind the gutting of the middle class. For those of you not to blinded by Republicanism read this http://prorev.com/unions.htm
